3D renders or a photo shoot — which one does your product actually need?

Both produce an image of your product. They cost differently, break differently, and one of them lets you change your mind afterwards. Here is how to tell which fits.

A client asked us last year to photograph a product range in eleven colours. Same bottle, eleven finishes. Only four existed as physical samples.

That is the moment the choice between photography and 3D stops being about taste and becomes about arithmetic.

Most businesses treat them as the same purchase with different price tags. They are not. They fail in different places, and knowing which one you are actually buying saves a lot of money.

What each one is really good at

Photography captures something that exists. It is fast, it is unarguably real, and for anything soft, textured, edible or worn on a person, it is the better answer. Nobody has ever preferred a rendered plate of food.

3D builds something that does not have to exist yet. Once the model is made, the colour, the angle, the material, the label and the lighting are all variables you can change afterwards for very little.

That last sentence is the whole difference. A photograph is a decision. A 3D model is a decision you can revisit.

Four questions that decide it

1. Does the product physically exist?

If it does not — still in tooling, still a CAD file, still a sample the factory has not shipped — then 3D is not a preference, it is the only option. Packaging mockups, pre-launch marketing and investor decks all routinely run ahead of the physical product.

2. How many variants?

This is where the maths turns.

One product, one finish, one angle: photograph it. A shoot is cheaper than modelling.

Eleven finishes, four angles each: the render wins, and not narrowly. In 3D the model is built once and the variants are a material swap. In photography every variant needs the physical object, and every angle is a new setup.

The rough crossover is around four to six variants. Below that, shoot. Above it, model.

3. Is the surface hard or soft?

3D is very strong on hard, manufactured surfaces: metal, glass, plastic, ceramic, machined parts, packaging, electronics, furniture, taps and fittings.

3D struggles with soft and organic: fabric drape, hair, skin, fresh food, flowers. Achievable, but the hours involved usually cost more than hiring a photographer.

If your product is a stainless steel bottle, 3D. If it is a saree, photograph it.

4. Will you need it again in six months?

A photo shoot delivers files. A 3D project delivers files and an asset.

Next season’s colourway is a new shoot, or it is an afternoon in the existing scene. A year in, that difference compounds — and it is the reason manufacturers with recurring launches usually end up with a 3D library whether they planned one or not.

What each one costs, honestly

Photography is priced per day plus setup: studio, lighting, a stylist if the category needs one, and retouching after. For a straightforward product range you are booking a day and getting a defined set of images.

3D is priced per project, and it splits in two:

  • Modelling — the expensive part, done once. Driven by geometry complexity, not by how many images you eventually want.
  • Rendering — cheap per image once the model exists. More angles and more variants are close to marginal cost.

We quote 3D per project rather than publishing a rate, and that is not evasion: the range between a single cosmetic bottle and a multi-tower architectural development is too wide for a band to mean anything. What we do commit to is an itemised quote before anything starts, with modelling and rendering priced separately so you can see exactly what a twelfth angle costs.

Turnaround: product renders typically 4–7 working days. Architectural interiors and exteriors, 7–14.

What we need from you to start

The more of this you have, the cheaper and faster it goes:

  • CAD files — .STEP, .DWG, .OBJ or .FBX. Best case by a distance; the geometry is already solved.
  • Technical drawings with dimensions — good.
  • Photographs plus a dimension sheet — workable. We rebuild from reference.
  • Physical sample — useful for materials, especially finish and reflectivity.
  • Artwork — label and packaging files, so the render carries your actual graphics.

Most projects that run over budget do so because dimensions arrived late or changed after modelling started.

Where the two meet

The split is rarely all-or-nothing, and the useful answer is often both:

  • Hero images in 3D, where you need perfect control of angle and light
  • Lifestyle and in-use photography, where a real environment and a real person do the work

That combination is common in e-commerce, and it is usually cheaper than trying to force either one to do the whole job.

It is also where being one company helps. BPS Network is the digital arm of a production studio, so the 3D team and the camera crew are the same building and the same schedule. The lighting in a render is set by people who light film sets — focal lengths, depth of field and light shaping come from physical cinematography rather than from CGI presets. That is why our renders tend not to have the plastic look that gives 3D away.

The short version

Photograph it if it exists, if there are few variants, if the surface is soft, and if you need it once.

Render it if it does not exist yet, if there are many variants, if the surface is manufactured, and if you will need it again.
